Paul Scheugenpflug is a German saxophonist and bandleader with deep jazz roots. He studied jazz saxophone in Nuremberg before continuing his studies in Frankfurt. In 2021, he formed the Paul Scheugenpflug Quartet, better known as PSQ.

Where Groove Meets Improvisation
The first thing you notice is movement. Paul’s music carries a strong pulse without feeling trapped by it. Melodies stay clear while the quartet leaves room for reaction. A groove might settle in for a moment. Then the players begin pulling at its edges.
That tension keeps things interesting.
Finding His Own Musical Language
PSQ began in 2021, though Paul’s musical world reaches beyond one corner of jazz. His compositions draw from fusion, hip-hop and pop. Improvisation gives those influences room to breathe.
The melodies often feel direct. Rhythm keeps them grounded. Then the saxophone stretches the frame. Rather than making complexity the point, Paul uses it to give simple ideas somewhere unexpected to travel.
The melody opens the door. Improvisation decides where it goes.
Start With WHO I AM
Released in 2026, WHO I AM is Paul’s debut album with PSQ. It’s a natural starting point for hearing where the quartet stands today.
Melody and groove stay close to the surface. Improvisation keeps the music from settling into one shape. Across the project, those parts meet in different ways. For a first-time listener, the album offers a clear route into Paul’s writing without explaining everything too quickly.
Identity can move. Music can move with it.
Listening
Two Places to Start Listening
PREFACE is the first single connected with WHO I AM. The title feels fitting for a starting point. It introduces the current chapter of PSQ while opening the door to the full album.
For an earlier snapshot, go back to STEPS, the quartet’s 2022 EP. Hearing it beside WHO I AM gives you another view of a band that has been shaping its shared musical language for several years

From the Record to the Room
The Dansomania Live Session puts that group connection right in front of you.
Paul stands on saxophone while keys, bass and drums fill the close studio setup around him. No musician disappears into the background. The compact room makes their physical cues easy to follow as each player finds space inside the arrangement.
Watch the Music Take Shape
Streaming gives you the finished sound. Watching PSQ adds the
human movement behind it. Paul’s saxophone sits inside a quartet where rhythm matters just as much as melody. The drums give the music momentum. Bass holds the center while the keys add another layer around Paul’s lines. The pleasure here isn’t a huge stage or dramatic production. It’s watching four musicians build the music together.
Some music makes more sense once you watch it happen.
